Framing the Icons of Our Community: Museum-Quality Custom Framing in San Francisco

At Underglass, being a San Francisco frame shop for more than 40 years means something deeper than just framing art, it means framing the culture, the neighborhoods, and the people who make this city feel like home. And every once in a while, a piece comes through our door that reminds us exactly why we love what we do.

Recently, we had the joy of framing a bright, unapologetically pink poster from our friends at The Stud, an iconic LGBTQ+ nightlife institution and a symbol of creativity, resilience, and chosen family in San Francisco. The print’s electric energy called for a frame that could keep up, so we designed a custom acrylic frame in the exact same candy-pink hue. The result is bold, joyful, and deeply San Francisco.

This project also brought back memories of the incredible Stud fundraiser we hosted at our shop two years ago: an evening full of art, stories, and community support that reminded us how intertwined our work is with the people around us.

When we say we’re a neighborhood frame shop, this is what we mean: we’ve grown with this city, framed its history, celebrated its artists, and protected its stories - from Castro to SoMa to the Mission and beyond. For decades, folks have trusted us with their concert posters, queer archives, family photographs, protest art, and cultural ephemera. And we’re honored every time.

Whether it’s a rare poster from a beloved bar, a print you picked up on Valencia, or something meaningful from your own walls, our team brings the same care to every project. We use museum-quality framing and conservation materials, including UV-filtering glazing, archival backing, and custom design because preserving culture means protecting it for the next generation.

With the holidays approaching, this is the perfect time to bring in your posters, photos, or artwork for custom framing in San Francisco. A framed piece, especially one with story behind it makes a personal, thoughtful gift. And if you’re framing something for your own home? Even better. We love helping people create spaces that reflect who they are and what they love.

After 40 years, we’re still proud to be the place where San Francisco brings its art to be cared for and where community continues to shape our work.
