Framing a Bold Relief Print: Custom Framing in San Francisco at Underglass
At Underglass Custom Framing, a San Francisco frame shop serving the city since 1985, we love projects that sit right at the intersection of art, design, and attitude. This recent custom framing project features Mafia, a relief print by Los Angeles–based Latin American artist Sebacuri — a signed edition defined by its vivid orange palette and graphic intensity.
Our client wanted the framing to feel just as intentional as the artwork itself. Rather than softening the piece, the goal was to amplify its energy and give it a strong visual presence on the wall.
A Frame That Adds Movement
We chose a mirror-finish slanted frame, a bold design decision that introduces reflection, light, and a subtle sense of motion. The angled profile creates a dynamic edge around the print, while the mirrored surface interacts with the surrounding space — changing slightly as you move past it. It brings a touch of animation to the piece without competing with the artwork.
This approach works especially well with relief prints, where texture and depth are already part of the story. The frame doesn’t disappear — it participates.
Museum-Quality Framing, Always
As with all our projects, the artwork is protected using museum-quality framing materials, including archival mounting and UV-protective glazing. Whether it’s a signed contemporary print, a vintage poster, or a deeply personal piece, conservation is always part of the design conversation.
We’ve been framing art through decades of shifting trends, and one thing hasn’t changed: quality matters. Especially for collectors.
