A Bold Canvas, A Bold Frame: Custom Framing in San Francisco

At Underglass, our frame shop in San Francisco’s Castro District, we’ve been bringing art and design together for 40 years. From heirlooms to modern canvases, our approach to custom framing is all about turning art into lasting design statements for the home.

Recently, we had the pleasure of working on a vibrant zebra painting on canvas: a piece where the stripes burst with color, from pink to blue, purple, green, and yellow. Because the artwork was on canvas, we began by carefully stretching the canvas in-house, ensuring a smooth, gallery-quality foundation before moving into the design.

For the frame itself, we wanted to echo the boldness of the zebra’s stripes while keeping the look refined. We designed a two-part frame: a high-lacquered yellow outer frame with a classic contour, paired with a red textured fillet that mirrors the energy and movement of the brushstrokes. Together, this created a striking contemporary frame design that feels like a gallery statement piece, yet tailored perfectly to our client’s home.

As always, we used museum-quality materials to ensure preservation and longevity because custom framing is about more than looks, it’s about protecting memories and investments.

If you’re in San Francisco and thinking about framing your own artwork, now is the perfect time to start planning. The holidays aren’t far away, and custom projects like canvas stretching and bold frame design take time to complete with care.

Come by Underglass, your trusted Castro frame shop, and let’s create something unforgettable.
