Custom Certificate Framing in San Francisco: A Thoughtful, Individual Approach

At Underglass Framing, custom framing in San Francisco has always been about understanding the story behind the piece. From our Castro frame shop, we’ve spent over 40 years framing everything from fine art to rare documents, certificates, and personal ephemera using museum-quality materials and conservation techniques.

This mid-century Hui o Pele membership certificate presented a unique design opportunity. The carved, artifact-style wooden frame evokes a rustic, almost tribal feel that connects naturally to the history of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. To elevate the presentation, we layered two mats: a warm orange fabric mat for texture and depth, paired with a brushed gold mat beneath it, revealed just enough to act as a quiet accent.

To keep the overall design from feeling too traditional, we reverse-cut the top mat, a contemporary framing detail that adds clean structure and contrast against the old-world frame profile. All materials were selected for long-term preservation, ensuring the certificate remains protected while being fully appreciated on the wall.

This kind of museum-quality certificate framing in San Francisco is what we mean by an individual approach to design. Unexpected colors, thoughtful materials, and careful craftsmanship come together to reflect both the piece and the personal style of the owner.
