Framing Spotlight: Günter Dohr’s Geometric Composition 1969

At Underglass Custom Picture Framing in San Francisco’s Castro District, we love when projects give us the chance to design something truly unique. Recently, we had the privilege of framing a hand-signed serigraph by German artist Günter Dohr, “Geometric Composition 1969.” This rare Pop/Op Art piece is bursting with bold purples, pinks, and golds — and our job was to create a frame that would elevate it while keeping the artwork fully protected with museum-quality picture framing.

Custom Framing San Francisco Art Collectors Love

For this project, our San Francisco framers designed and built a custom walnut frame from Oregon. The frame’s pyramid-like profile — with curves and straight architectural lines — perfectly complements Dohr’s geometric composition and kinetic exploration of form and light. We chose a rich walnut stain to add warmth and balance against the vivid colors of the serigraph.

To create even more depth, we incorporated a spandrel that rounds out the corners and casts dramatic shadows on the mat. Floating the serigraph allows the entire artwork to be visible, turning it into a centerpiece worthy of any collection. This is the kind of detail that sets apart professional picture framing in San Francisco from standard, off-the-shelf frames.

Every step of this project was built with preservation in mind. We used a fine fabric mat, Optium Museum Acrylic for crystal-clear protection, and fully reversible mounting to ensure the artwork remains perfectly intact. At Underglass Custom Picture Framing in the Castro, our team has specialized in museum-quality framing in San Francisco for over 40 years, protecting everything from original artworks and serigraphs to posters, photographs, and personal memorabilia.

Since 1985, our Castro frame shop has been part of San Francisco’s creative community, helping clients frame art that reflects their lifestyle, their stories, and their love of this city. Whether it’s a rare serigraph like this, a collectible, or a local print you picked up on your weekend walk, we’ll create a custom San Francisco frame design that showcases and protects it.
