Framing Bold Abstraction with Intention and Balance
At Underglass, our custom framing projects often begin with a simple question: how do we let the artwork lead while giving it a strong, confident presence on the wall? This bold abstract expressionist piece, defined by powerful black brushstrokes and tactile paper, gave us the perfect opportunity to build a frame design that feels intentional, layered, and visually calm.
We started with a double mat to create structure and depth. The top mat is a soft white with a black core, chosen specifically to echo the texture of the artist’s paper and connect naturally with the dark, gestural marks of the painting. Beneath it, we added a reverse-cut gold mat, revealing a clean, deliberate line of gold. The reverse cut keeps the presentation sharp—no extra white lines, just a subtle accent that brings warmth and contrast without competing with the artwork.
To complete the design, we selected a vintage-style gold frame with a black center. This pairing mirrors the relationship between the gold reveal and the black core mat, creating a cohesive visual flow from frame to artwork. The result is a framing solution that feels elevated, balanced, and right at home in a thoughtfully designed San Francisco interior.
As a frame shop in San Francisco for over 40 years, we’ve seen how strong framing doesn’t overpower, it supports. Whether it’s abstract painting, works on paper, or personal pieces that define a space, museum-quality framing is about making intentional choices that last.
