Custom Framing a Textured Abstract Canvas in San Francisco

When framing a painting on canvas, one of the advantages is the ability to use a floater frame. Unlike works on paper, canvas doesn’t require glazing, which means there’s no glass separating the viewer from the surface of the artwork. That openness invites you to get closer, to really experience the texture, movement, and layers of paint as they were intended. (And yes, we’re absolutely aware that some canvases do call for glazing for conservation reasons 🙂 Every piece is different.)

For this bold, expressive abstract, we chose a minimalist walnut floater frame with a narrow reveal. The subtle gap between the canvas and the frame creates dimension while keeping the presentation clean and modern. The rich walnut finish, with its natural wood grain and warm tone, brings balance to the composition and adds a sense of quiet refinement.

Walnut floater frames are a longtime favorite at Underglass. They’re especially well-suited for clients who appreciate minimalism but still want the warmth and character of real hardwood. This approach keeps the focus on the artwork while helping it feel grounded and at home in a San Francisco interior.
