Custom Framing a Charcoal Sketch in San Francisco

Charcoal sketch framed with fabric matting and an ornate antique-style frame using museum-quality custom framing in San Francisco.

Charcoal drawings bring their own set of considerations when it comes to framing. The medium has softness, texture, and a directness that benefits from a design approach that feels considered without becoming overly traditional.

For this piece, we used fabric matting to add depth and warmth, but kept the presentation clean by incorporating a cascade step rather than a fillet. This choice gives the mat structure and dimension while maintaining a contemporary look, avoiding the rustic feel a fillet can sometimes introduce. The result is layered and refined without distracting from the drawing itself.

To balance the modern mat design, we selected an ornate, antique-style frame. Its decorative profile adds contrast and a touch of playfulness, creating a dialogue between classic detail and modern restraint. It’s a combination that feels intentional and personal - designed to suit both the artwork and the space it lives in.

At Underglass, we’ve been custom framing art in San Francisco for over 40 years, working with everything from charcoal sketches to museum-quality works on paper. Each project is approached individually, with attention to materials, proportion, and how the final piece will live on the wall.
