Round Custom Frames in San Francisco – Jasperware Medusa Plaque
Not every piece of art fits into a square frame and that’s where thoughtful custom framing makes all the difference.
This round Jasperware Medusa medallion is a beautiful example. Jasperware, developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 18th century, is known for its soft matte “biscuit” finish and neoclassical relief designs. Pieces like this were often used as decorative plaques or integrated into furniture, making them both sculptural and historical.
Because of its circular shape and dimensional relief, this project called for a true custom round frame. We built a tight-fitting, deep black satin frame that follows the exact contour of the plaque. To elevate the presentation, we used a coarse black linen fabric mat and created a sink float so the medallion is gently recessed into its own defined space rather than simply mounted on top.
The textured weave of the linen becomes visible up close, adding subtle depth and contrast against the pale stoneware. The darker palette enhances the sculptural details of Medusa’s form while keeping the overall look clean and focused.
As with all of our framing in San Francisco, we used museum-quality and conservation-grade materials to ensure long-term preservation. Dimensional objects and historic decorative pieces require careful mounting techniques that protect the integrity and value of the work, no shortcuts.
At Underglass, our frame shop in the Castro with over 40 years of experience, we regularly design custom solutions for unusual shapes, decorative objects, posters, photographs, and fine art. Whether it’s a round plaque, a shadowbox project, or traditional photo framing, our goal is the same: protect the piece and give it the presence it deserves.
